Errant teachers face the sack

KUALA Tquick-takes-2ERENGGANU – Dismissal is on the cards for teachers who have completed their training but fail to report for duty on time.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said that although these were isolated cases, a warning was necessary to overcome the shortage of teachers, especially in the remote areas of Sabah and Sarawak.

"Most of the teachers have not declined to go, but there are a few who refused when asked to go to these remote areas. The shortage of teachers is caused by teachers who have opted to teach certain subjects,"  he said here today.

PUTRAJAYA – Mohd Sidek Hassan was re-appointed Chief Secretary to the Government on a contract basis for a year from June 24, 2010 to June 23, 2011, the Prime Minister's Office announced today.

It said in a statement here that the appointment had received the consent of of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Mohd Sidek, 58, was appointed Chief secretary to the Government on Sept 3, 2006, and held the post until his compulsory retirement upon turning 56 on June 23, 2007.

PETALING JAYA – Fifty residents of Pangsapuri Seri Ara, Damansara gathered in the court complex compound here today in support of a couple detained over the death of an 18-month-old baby.

They arrived as early as 8am and gathered for 45 minutes to find out whether the remand order on the 33-year-old lorry attendant and his 23-year-old wife was extended or not.

Magistrate Ho Kwong Chin extended remand on the couple for four days starting tomorrow.

SEREMBAN – Police have uncovered a drug processing laboratory producing metamphetamine and seized processing equipment worth RM200,000 during a raid on a house at Ladang Staffield, Pajam, near here yesterday.

"We believe the house was turned into a 'kitchen lab' to process the drug for markets in the Klang Valley and Seremban," said state Narcotics CID Chief, Supt VR Ravi Chandran
