Hassan exits Petronas

KUALA LUMPUR – Petronas bid farewell to Mohd Hassan Marican (pic) whose term as president and chief executive officer ended today.
Shamsul Azhar Abbas, who was the former MISC Bhd managing director, takes over from tomorrow.
Thousands of employees were present at Petronas Twin Towers here to bid farewell to Hassan who has led the national oil company since 1995.
Hundreds of eateries using fake halal certificates
KUALA LUMPUR – Hundreds of eateries in the country are believed to be using fake halal certificates bought for between RM800 and RM1,000 each from two companies said to be involved in the business.
Exposing the scam today, Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia executive secretary Nadzim Johan said it had received complaints on the use of halal certificates which were not recognised by the Islamic Development Department by many eateries, including gourmet cafes, kopitiams and fast food outlets.
It is said that over 160 eateries had obtained certificates from the two companies, one of which is based here and the other in Petaling Jaya.
Frustrated thieves torch school
RAWANG – Six men set fire to a school's printing room and its administration office after failing in their attempt to steal the school's laptops.
The men, aged between 20 and 40 years, broke into the school on Monday and assaulted two security guards who were on patrol, causing serious injuries.
"The six suspects also damaged two closed-circuit television cameras in the school's canteen," said Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) San Yuk headmaster Yau Kok Wan today.
Subsidised diesel card cloners nabbed
PENANG - Police busted a syndicate which had been active in cloning the subsidised diesel card belonging to Syarikat Rapid Penang Sdn Bhd here, with the arrest of three men at a petrol station in Mergong, Kedah last Friday.
Penang Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Asst Comm Roslee Chik said the trio, aged between 30 and 40, were nabbed while trying to clone the subsidised diesel card.
Rapid Penang in its police report stated that between July and October last year, it suffered losses amounting to RM900,000 because of the syndicate's card-cloning activity, he told reporters here today.
Firms linked to illegal deposit taking under probe
KUALA LUMPUR – Bank Negara Malaysia has started investigations into Semangat Teknologi Gagah Sdn Bhd and its related companies on suspicion of conducting illegal deposit taking.
The raids took place on Feb 4 in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor following complaints received from members of the public, the central bank said today.

Malacca wants ferris wheel to stay put
MALACCA – The state wants the Eye On Malaysia to remain in Malacca and will negotiate with its Belgian owner over the matter.
Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam said lawyers for the Eye On Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the operator of the giant ferris wheel, will put forward several proposals to the Fitraco NV.
