Ban SMS contests, says Murugiah

KUALA LUMPUR - Relevant authorities have been urged to study the possibility of banning contests over the short messaging service (SMS) as they contain elements of cheating.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department  T Murugiah said he felt that SMS contests should be banned as it was a form of gambling, with the people ended up losers while the organisers raked in huge profits.

"I have received many complaints from many people, who had fallen prey to the scams," he told reporters after meeting SMS contest victims here today.

KUALA LUMPUR - MCA Youth Chief Dr Wee Ka Siong said today that he would sue Robert Phang for his slanderous remarks against him when the latter spoke at a "live" talk show on TV last Friday.

Wee also said that he was notified by some MCA leaders who had forwarded an SMS in Chinese purportedly sent out by Phang to inform them that he was going on air at 10pm last Friday to expose Wee's involvement in the Port Klang Free Zone scandal.

"After consulting my lawyer, he (the lawyer) asked me to send out an SMS to the programme producer and programme host to say that I will also take legal action against them. I sent out the SMS at 9.37pm," he told reporters at a news conference at Wisma MCA here.

JOHOR BARU - The police have detained a 62-year-old businessman for possession of a powerful homemade air rifle here last Friday.

The suspect was picked up at his home in Taman Daya about 3.30pm.

Initial police investigations have revealed that the suspect might have been making air rifles for sale to the public, Johor Baru (south) police chief ACP Zainuddin Yaakob said today.

KUCHING - A grasscutter is fighting for his life in the Sarawak General hospital after he was attacked by a swarm of hornet this morning.

The 51-year-old from Padawan was said to be attack mostly on his back and hands including his head when he was cutting grass at Semabah here along with 11 others.

He was hospitalised after he became feverish two hours following the attack.

Sigai's remains were recovered from the river on Monday.
KUCHING – The decomposed body of an UiTM driver was found floating 100 metres away from where he went missing on Saturday afternoon at Stutong Baru river.

Enchangi Sigai, 53 was found by Rela personnel who had joined in the search with police and firemen since his wife reported him missing.

The deceased from Sungai Tapang had gone fishing in a boat with his 15-year-old son on Sunday morning.

KUALA TERENGGANU - The Road Transport Department (JPJ) today auctioned 28 confiscated vehicles for RM69,250 within an hour.

Terengganu JPJ director Abdul Rahman Emang Anyie said a 17-year-old Honda Civic fetched the highest price of RM12,600.

He said the JPJ would conduct two more similar auctions this year, and those who wanted to make a bid would only have to place a deposit of RM50 instead of RM500 which was imposed last year.

SHAH ALAM - Thirty Bandar Klang taxi and hire-car drivers gathered in front of the Bangunan Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah here to protest against the demolition of the public transport terminal at Lorong Kerayong, Klang by the Klang Municipal Council.

The chairman of the Bandar Klang Hire-Car Drivers' Association, Aziz Manrol, said the council had never held any discussion with them before demolishing the terminal which was more than 30 years old.

"The terminal had been our source of income, in fact it was a base where the low-income group particularly could get public transport service," he told reporters here today.

KUCHING - Sarawak Police Commissioner Mohmad Salleh has been appointed advisor to the St John Ambulance Sarawak.

Announcing this today, St John Ambulance Sarawak chairman and commander Ang Lai Soon said the state police chief would be an asset to the organisation with his wealth of experience.

"Ever since the establishment of St.John Ambulance Sarawak in 1972, the police have always been very supportive of the work of this humanitarian movement and for which we are grateful," he said in a statement here.
