KUALA LUMPUR -- Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been urged to explain his statement supporting Israel's security to PAS' Syura Council (Council of Religious Elders).
Umno Information chief Ahmad Maslan said Anwar's explanation to just PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat here on Tuesday was not enough because the Kelantan Menteri Besar always sided with Anwar, even on his cases involving alleged sodomy and a controversial sex video.
"Nik Aziz is no longer credible as he is a political ulama (religious scholar). If Anwar is afraid to face the PAS' Syura Council, then there is no need to talk about wanting to debate with the Prime Minister (Najib Tun Razak)," he said in a statement here.
Following the hour-long meeting, which was joined by PAS Information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Anwar had said Nik Aziz understood his stand on Israel.
The meeting was held after the council demanded that Anwar retract his statement or sue The Wall Street Journal if its report on the matter had been inaccurate.
