GEORGE TOWN -- The Perhimpunan Sejuta Umat (Himpun) secretariat here denied issuing a letter said to carry the forged signature of Penang executive council (exco) member in charge of Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumerism, Abdul Malik Kassim.

Director of the state Himpun secretariat, Mohamed Hafiz Mohamed Nordin said they had no knowledge of the matter and had never issued such a letter to any mosque.

"We don't need to issue a letter asking Muslims to attend the gathering (of one million followers). For the past one month, we have been relying on networking to publicise this gathering. We don't know who wrote and issued the said letter," he told reporters, here.

On Thursday, a portal reported that an "official letter" bearing the state government logo and allegedly signed by Abdul Malik had been sent to several mosque committees, asking Muslims to attend Himpun in Kepala Batas today.

Abdul Malik, who is also Batu Maung assemblyman, denied having issued such a letter and he then lodged a police report.

Mohamed Hafiz said the number of people attending the gathering was not that important as what was more importabnt was restoring and strengthening the religious faith of Muslims.

More than 10,000 people are expected at the gathering and former Selangor state exco member Dr Hasan Ali is among the four speakers at the gathering themed, "Save Faith".
