KOTA BARU - MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek (picture) has urged the public to refrain from speculating about former Transport Minister Dr Ling Liong Sik’s court case.
He said they should instead leave it to the courts to decide the fate of those charged.
“I would suggest that the public refrain from speculating because the judicial system present in this country is efficient to see that justice will be carried out without fear or favour,” he told reporters after launching the Kelantan MCA annual general meeting here yesterday, according to The Star.
Chua also said it would not be in the interest of the people for the DAP to continue making an issue over the matter, adding that this was only for the party’s own political mileage.
On Thursday, Ling was charged at the Sessions Court in Putrajaya with cheating the Government over the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal.
He was accused of knowingly deceiving the Cabinet to approve a land purchase in Pulau Indah for the purpose of the Mega Distribution Hub Project in Port Klang in 2002, which resulted in wrongful losses to the Government.
In Kuala Lumpur, MCA vice-president Chor Chee Heung said he had confidence in Ling and hoped that truth would prevail.
“I called Dr Ling after he returned home from court and visited him at his residence to give his family moral support. I have confidence in him although I am not a judge and I do not know the case well,” he said, adding that he was shocked to hear the news, The Star reported.
Chor said Ling had told him then that he would have to face trial no matter what and that “the truth will prevail”.
Asked whether he would be summoned as a witness in the case since he was the Port Klang Authority chairman, Chor said he did not think so because he only held the position from June 2007 to February 2008.
In Shah Alam, Selangor DAP deputy chairman Ronnie Liu urged the police to name the complainant involved in Ling’s case.
“This fact is missing from the charge sheet that was published in the local dailies,” he said.
“All I know is that the documents and reports used to come up with the charge are from the information and police reports that I made on the DAP’s behalf from 2004 regarding
