Church arson: Brothers to stand trial
Friday, 30 July 2010 22:23
KUALA LUMPUR - Two despatch riders - brothers Raja Muhammad Faizal Raja Ibrahim, 24, and Raja Muhammad Iszham Raja Ibrahim, 22 - were ordered by the Sessions Court here to enter their defence on Aug 10.

Despatch rider Azuwan Shah Ahmad, 23, was acquitted Friday of setting fire to the Metro Tabernacle Church in Desa Melawati, Wangsa Maju, on Jan 7. Azuwan's acquittal was due to a lack of evidence.

“The prosecution has established a prima facie case against the first (Raja Muhammad Faizal) and second (Raja Muhammad Idzham) accused,” Judge S.M. Komathy Suppiah said.

The three were charged on Jan 29 with committing mischief with fire, with the intention of destroying the building in Desa Melawati at 11.50pm on Jan 7.

All three pleaded not guilty.

DPP Azlina Rasdi and Lailawati Ali are prosecuting.

The Metro Tabernacle Church was among several places of worships attacked in January in the wake of the controversial High Court ruling allowing Catholic weekly Herald to use the word "Allah" in its publications.
