KUALA LUMPUR – Do you blush when the word 'sex' is mentioned and think it is an unnecessary topic? It's time to change this perception and understand sex better for a healthier life.
According to gynecologist and consultant obstetrician, Dr. Nor Ashikin Mokhtar (left), having both good health and sex are correlated which have positive impacts to develop and sustain a relationship.
The founder and executive chairman of Primanora Medical Centre has recently given a talk, 'Good Health, Great Sex… For a Better Life', Saturday at the FemmeCity fair held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
Why sex is good?
"Couples who take time to cultivate and maintain a healthy and satisfying sexual relationship are more connected and have less health problems," said Dr. Nor Ashikin.
Sex is proven to be a positive factor to longer longevity because frequent sexual intercourse contributes to better physical and emotional condition of the human body.
A study conducted in the United States showed that semen can act as an anti-depressant. Women who have sex without condom, thus exposed directly to semen, were less depressed.
It is claimed that frequent sperm ejaculation can provide protective benefits against development of prostate cancer in men.
A research conducted at the New England Research Institute in Massachusetts found that men who have sex more than twice a week are less prone to have heart diseases. A 30-minute sex routine can burn up to 85 calories or more.
Studies have also found that women who regularly experience orgasm are healthier, more rational with an active brain, and more likely to be successful in their careers.
Besides, orgasm induces the body to release love hormone (oxytocin) and happy hormone (endorphin) which can lead to a higher pain tolerance threshold suppressing discomfort signals.
Interestingly, it is also believed that oxytocin has a wound healing function.
Common sex problems
Aging is part of the inevitable life cycle and its arrival brings a host of physical condition that can cause sexual dysfunction.
Menopause causes women to lose interest in sex and the declining level of estrogen can lead to lower blood circulation to the tissues in the pelvis causing the vagina to thin.
As a result, sex becomes a painful activity because the tissue and fat around the vagina has started to erode.
Men too suffer from 'partial androgen deficiency of the aging male' (PADAM) and is evident with poorer sexual performance. There are many symptoms of PADAM but notably easy to get irritated, diminished muscle strength, and poorer erections.
Dr. Nor Ashikin said that action must be taken to overcome these sexual dysfunction challenges.
It is utmost important that husbands and wives understand the hormonal and physical changes brought by aging and find ways to accommodate each other.
How to spice up your love life?
Couples can try to revive the feeling of being on a date. For example, a small gesture such as a peck on the cheek before leaving to office can maintain that special feeling towards someone.
Dr. Nor Ashikin said it is helpful to start in the early morning to have better connection at night.
Television is not the only thing that needs a prime time. Sex too needs a prime time like an early "morning glory" or a "Sunday afternoon delight".
Instead of spending quality time in a restaurant, plan a date night in the bedroom where you can talk and listen to each other without distractions.
It is wrong that many people perceived sex as compulsory in a marriage. Never think of having sex as a job but make it fun and enjoyable to your partner. Be adventurous and inventive if you understand this point.
The golden rule of thumb is to communicate and share sexual pleasures with him or her.
Get fit and exercise, preferably together, to maintain physical attraction and good health.
Food that gives better sex
Although there are certain foods that can stimulate sex drive, it is important to eat responsibly by understanding your health condition and consuming in moderate amount.
Eating oysters can enhance libido
It is true that eating oysters can enhance libido. It contains zinc which is known to be one of the key nutrients that releases sex hormones and increases the male's sperm production.
Ginger also contains zinc but with additional Vitamin C which improves blood circulation for better ejaculation.
Pumpkin seeds is a good source for magnesium. This mineral produces sex hormones that modulate sex drive giving better arousal and orgasm.
Vitamin E, otherwise known as the 'Sex Vitamin', is essential for male's sperm production and female's ovarian health. This vitamin helps to ease hormonal imbalances due to menopause, low libido, as well as, to combat vaginal changes.
No wonder everyone loves to eat chocolate. Not only does it taste good, it gives the feeling of falling in love through the release of endorphins (happy hormones).
It is scientifically proven that women who consume more chocolate have higher levels of sexual desire, arousal and orgasm. In other words, more satisfaction.
