KUALA LUMPUR – Gross exaggeration. This is what Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) has to say of news reports about him living an excessive lifestyle.
In a report late last year by the New York Post, Low was said to have rented a luxury apartment at Park Imperial in New York for US$100,000 (RM320,000) a month.
His Kuwaiti friend, Hamad Al-Wazzan, later emailed the newspaper to say that he was the one who had paid the rental.
What about the US$160,000 bar bill in New York's Avenue nightclub?
Low said he didn't pick up the tab and that others paid the bill, which was to celebrate the engagement of a friend.
His response to the £600 (RM3,000) Cristal champagnes sent to Lindsay Lohan was, "I think there is a pattern of trying to paint me as this person who orders champagne excessively."
He and his brother, Zhen Low, did not spend the whooping US$2mil in the St Tropez champagne war but there were some 40-50 others who ordered the drinks.
As for his relationship with socialite Paris Hilton, Low said that he was introduced by a good friend to her parents, Rick and Kathy Hilton.
He was able to introduce himself to Paris and Nicky Hilton during a trip with some, again, 40 people and they were in the same group with prominent Russia, Kazakhstan, and Middle Eastern friends.
The posh 28th birthday party last November at the poolside of Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, was thrown by a group of close friends and investors, he said.
"It was actually a group of my close friends; some of them were my investors who threw me this surprise party which I must say was memorable and phenomenal and I was very surprised by it," he told The Star.
