PENANG – The Emergency and Trauma Department of the Penang Hospital, facing a shortage of emergency aid equipment, has appealed for public donations to buy them. Its Deputy Medical Director I, Dr Norida Ahmad, said the shortage was due to the increase in the number of patients received by the department last year. She said the shortage had also caused the hospital to borrow emergency equipment from the State Civil Defence Department, Penang St John Ambulance and voluntary fire and rescue stations.
Sarawak to promote itself as orchid haven
KUCHING – Sarawak, which is situated in the island of Borneo, is a strategic location to collect orchids from around the world as the state itself is rich with orchids, said Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Taib said realising this potential, Sarawak through the Kuching Municipal Council, had set up an orchid park which housed a collection of 40,000 orchid trees of 65 variants.
"Orchids are highly valued by orchid enthusiasts in developed countries and we in Borneo have a wide variety of orchid species to offer," he said when speaking at the launch of the 15.4 acre Orchid Park, which cost RM8.97mil in Jalan Astana here today.
Help Chilean quake victims
KUALA LUMPUR – The public can now channel monetary contributions to alleviate the sufferings of earthquake victims in Chile via the "Tabung Bencana Kementerian Luar Negeri".
The Foreign Ministry, in a statement today, said that the aid fund had been activated to enable the public to make monetary contributions.
On Feb 28, a 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck 115km north-east of the City of Concepcion and 325km south-west of Santiago, the capital of Chile.
Widower held with 61 rounds of ammo
KUANTAN – A widower, believed to have been involved in several cases of break-ins, was nabbed in a house in Taman Seri Inderapura, near here on Thursday's night.
Police found 61 bullets in the suspect's house during Ops Pintu around Kuantan.
Pahang deputy CID chief, Supt Nordin Mustapha, said during the raid, the result of a tip-off, police discovered 47 .38 Special bullets; 14 bullets for a sawn-off rifle; and 76 bullet casings.
Restaurant owner denies causing girlfriend's death
KUALA LUMPUR – A restaurateur pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to causing his girlfriend's death last Valentine's Day.
Zhao Fuan, 42, a Chinese national and owner of the Hong Fook Steamboat Restaurant, is charged with causing the death of Guo Hongxia, also a Chinese national, at Jalan Rimbunan Raya 1, Laman Rimbunan Kepong, Sentul, between 12.30am and 6am last Feb 14.
The charge for culpable homicide not amounting to murder carries a 30 years' jail and fine upon conviction. — Bernama
