PETALING JAYA – The name sounds ominous but Killerbatch is made up of a bunch of kind souls out to help village students in Sabah get a good education.

Former students of Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Kulim in Kedah who called themselves the Killerbatch are raising money to build a hostel for 100 students in Kiulu, 60km from Kota Kinabalu.gpq-1

Once the hostel is ready, the students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tun Fuad Stephens will no longer have to trek an hour through the jungles and across streams to attend classes.

More money to be raised

Killerbatch has managed to raise RM200,000 so far from a Tune Talk contest it won and a celebrity charity drive in December.

It is optimistic about raising RM244,000 more though its Ghazal Party Queen concert that is also been held to mark the 30th anniversary of Killerbatch.

The show is a nostalgic look at  the 60s and 70s form of entertainment for villagers in northern Malaysia, who revelled in the song and dance routines as escapism from a life of toil and drudgery.

Something different

The play, directed by Esnani Elias, will feature men in drag as dancers. It runs from Feb 5-8.

Admission fee to the 8.30pm play at Taman Budaya Kuala Lumpur starts from RM20. Call Zaili at 012- 369 1097 or Wati at 013-340 5299 for more information.
