A day of fallen super heroes
Saturday, 10 October 2009 12:22

KUALA LUMPUR -  The delegates have made their decision. The all important 10-10-10 emergency general meeting is over but the MCA saga will continue with a president they have no confidence in and a disgraced deputy president they do not want to reinstate.

The Malaysian Mirror recaps the the events from the begiining of the EGM to its conclusion.

4.05pm The polls on the three resolutions were tallied and the announcement made.

3.22pm It has been announced that there is only one percent difference in the votes on the first resolution - the motion of no-confidence against the president. A recount has been called.

One percent of 2,304 votes means a difference of 23-24 votes.

Votes on the other two resolutions are confirmed okay, meaning that there is at least a two percent difference.

The super heroes

3.20pm More than half of the 2,307 delegates have left. They just came in to cast their votes. Those remaining are probably those from KL and nearby plus the hard-core supporters.

Dr Chua Soi Lek who arrived early this morning to mingle with the delegates who were having their breakfast, left as the EGM begun at 10am.

"If three of the agendas are passed, I can go 'home'," Chua said, adding that "home" referred to the MCA.

3.00pm Sensing the weariness among those in the hall, the speaker jokingly announces, "Please go and enjoy a coffee if you're falling asleep". Good advice. Apparently, the speaker is concerned that the process will drag on.egm_hall.jpg

2.45pm Superman, Batman and Spiderman - these are the popular nicks for the Number One, Number Two and the so-called 'Third Force' among the English-speaking delegates, at least. They tend to avoid naming names when talking about the key players at today's EGM. Quite apt, eh!

2.35pm 'Please be patient. We are still counting', came the announcement over the speaker to anxious delegates waiting outside Dewan San Choon.

2.25pm Counting still on. Process looks tedious as each ballot paper has to be viewed and agreed upon by agents from both camps. With three resolutions, there are actually more than 7,000 ballots to be viewed, consented upon and confirmed valid. It could take much longer than expected.

Jovial mood among delegates

1.50pm Pretty jovial mood among delegates loitering outside Dewan San Choon. Many others are still enjoying their lunch or just chatting away on the ground floor. Two delegates are catching a cat nap in their seats in a quiet corner outside the hall.

1.25pm Party speaker announces that only 2,304 ballot papers were collected although 2,307 delegates registered attendance. So he expects to see not more than 2,304 votes at the final tally.

Among the 73 absentees at the EGM was former president Ong Ka Ting.

1.10pm Counting expected to take quite a while as it would be counted and tallied resolution by resolution. There are three ballot boxes for each of the resolution. It is announced that counting has been carried out 'Election Commission style'. It is very professional and transparent, so the announcer declares.

Transparent? At least, the ballot boxes are of the transparent type.

Professional? At least, none of the scrutineers are known to have dabbled in black magic or David Copperfield illusions.

12.30pm Dewan San Choon is like a heavily guarded fortress. No one is allowed in as counting starts. Only scrutineers representing both camps and other authorised personnel are allowed to enter.

12.25pm Many delegates are seen crossing the road over to Ampark Park, possibly to 'main ular'. As is always the case, long meetings tend to bore many. And the male delegates, particularly those coming from outside of KL, are usually more adventurous. The women seem a disciplined lot, lining up patiently for their serving and then sitting down together for lunch.

12.20pm Friendly atmosphere among delegates over lunch. Party leaders seen mingling and chatting with delegates. Smiles all round.

egm9.jpgNo sign of heavy police presence - only a few traffic cops are seen helping to direct traffic along the busy Jalan Ampang in KL where Wisma MCA is located.

12.15pm Delegates are streaming out for lunch which is served at the entrance of Wisma MCA. The carpark area has been converted into a dining area

Ballot boxes sealed

12.10pm - Ballot boxes are being sealed with scrutineers observing nearby. Counting is expected to begin at 12.30pm

12.06pm - Party Speaker declared balloting closed as all delegates had cast their votes. MCA president Ong Tee Keat and CC members were among the last to vote. The much-watched EGM started at 10am, with delegates quickly getting down to work and agreeing to table just three out of the five agreed resolutions. 2,307 out of 2,377 delegates were present.
