KUALA LUMPUR -   “There is no personal glory. It’s just Kulim to Kiulu!” nur hamidi.jpg

This was the jubilant cry of businessman Nur Hamidi Baharuddin (pic, standing right), who was judged the RM50,000 winner in a charity drive by Tune Talk, the latest pre-paid cellular phone card provider.

The company had launched the 10-week campaign over its portal Freedom2Talk between May and July, which provided for participating subscribers to vote for the person with the best charity project among them.

The campaign, held ahead of its official launch of Tune Talk on Aug 19, had voters rooting for Nur Hamidi who led a college alumni group from Kulim, Kedah, to build a hotel for rural students in Kiulu, Sabah.

The 'Killerbatch' support

He and his band of old students from the Kulim campus of the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) called themselves ‘Killerbatch’, a name more likely to be associated with a bunch of teenagers with killer songs or an extremist terror group.

However, they are actually a well-educated and refined group of former college students who had been working hard to raise RM250,000 to build a hostel for SMK Fuad Stephens in Kiulu.

Winning RM50,000  as the prize for being the ‘Chief Talker’ on the Freedom2Talk portal, has brought Nur Hamidi,41, closer to realising their dream project.

"Killerbatch resolves to undertake this project right to its completion and that is why they have gone all out to ensure that we win this contest. There is no personal glory. It’s just Kulim to Kiulu!” said Nur Hamidi.

More fund-raising

He added that Killerbatch has planned several fund-raising activities to achieve their RM250,000 goal, including an upcoming art auction and a theatre project.

"At this point we don’t know if the art works will sell or if people will buy the theatre tickets.

“What’s important is that we shall try our best to fulfill our pledge to the school. We will do all that is within our reach to get funds to build their hostel, “said Nur Hamidi, who will also enjoy a year of free calls from Tune Talk.

As the 4th weekly winner of Freedom2Tjason lo2.jpgalk, he also received a RM200 AirAsia E-gift voucher.

Another Freedom2Talk member, Nazri Hassan, received RM10,000  and one year of free calls recruiting the most number of registered members to the portal.

Nur Hamidi , Nazri and other Freedom2Talk weekly winners received their prizes from Tune Talk chief executive officer Jason Lo (pic, left) at a  buka puasa event at the Rebung Restaurant in Bangsar on Friday.

Corporate social responsibility

Lo said corporate social responsibility is one way of making valuable impact in life, adding that the great response to the Freedom2Talk campaign has shown there is actually a lot of Malaysians that want to help others who are less fortunate.

“We think it's awesome that we had such a great response from so many people who want to use this money for something positive in the community.

"Nur Hamidi and his friends now have a bit more help in building their hostel for the  rural kids, and we hope they succeed in their endeavour,” said Lo.

"Nazri, on the other hand, has done amazingly in introducing his friends to Tune Talk, so he walks away with the individual prize for all his effort.

“We also want to congratulate all winners of the RM200 AirAsia E-Gift Vouchers and are glad that more people are enjoying the cool things we are putting together for them.

“It  won’t stop here. This is just the beginning,” he said.
