tan-lian-hoe2KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 30 -- The cooking oil shortage is over as supply in affected areas has fully recovered, said Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Tan Lian Hoe.

She said the government has no plans to increase price of subsidised cooking oil (sachets) from RM2.40 per kg to RM 3.50 per kg (bottles).

"We hope there is no panic buying as it will create shortage," she said after visiting Jinjang Utara market and Giant hypermarket at Brem Mall, Kepong here today.

Tan said 64 offences were reported this month including hoarding, selling without licence and illegal possession of cooking oil.

On the 11 price controlled items for Chinese New Year, she said the traders were found to be selling them according to the government ceiling price.

The items include live and standard chicken, Grade A, B and C eggs, imported cabbage, white bawal, big white prawn, lard, pork and and pig intestine.

"The public must become smart consumers by comparing price as sellers price similar items differently."

She assured that there was adequate supply of essential items during the new year period.

Some 1,600 price checkers and 1,900 enforcement officers will be out in force to monitor the price of goods under the price controlled scheme.
